It had never occurred to me that voles could be a hazard to ponds, but there have been reports of them gnawing their way through a pond liner causing the pond to leak. If you are aware of these rodents in your area it is best to take preventative action to stop voles damaging your pond liner. This can be achieved by laying a plastic covered wire netting when installing your liner to protect it from gnawing teeth.
Although ponds seldom suffer the presence of pests it is still best to know how to avoid them particularly those associated with pond plants:
- When you introduce new plants to your pond check the leaves for eggs or snails. Pond snails can be very destructive so taking every precaution to avoid their presence is advisable.
- Aphids, if present will appear in large numbers and can be found on the underside of leaves. Those that attack water plants are dark brown in colour. If you notice large holes appearing in your pond plants, cut off all affected leaves as soon as possible. Pesticides, even those with natural ingredients, are lethal to fish and other pond creatures.
- Waterlily beetles lays their eggs on the leaves and the larva start to eat away at the leaves. Again, these need to be physically removed before they destroy your waterlily plant.
Ponds, like gardens do need to checked regularly to make sure there are no unwanted visitors making a meal of your beautiful creation. If dealt with immediately, the consequences will be negligible.
