A natural grass edging is one of a number of different types of edging materials you can use to finish-off your garden pond to create an attractive feature in your preferred style to blend with the surrounding landscape. The function of edging is to both secure and protect the pond liner as well as to add aesthetic appeal to a garden pond.
Pond edging needs to be strong enough to withstand the weight of people standing on it and to prevent it from subsiding.
Grass can be used to create an effective natural edging. An important consideration if you are going to add this type of edging is the depth of soil required to grow healthy looking grass. Grass edging requires a minimum of 5cm of soil, but a 10cm depth is preferable to ensure it doesn’t dry out.
Another option is to use rock wool as the growing medium for your turf. This can be done by laying down dampened rock wool along the edge of your pond ensuring a neat edge. This option is likely to reduce maintenance by creating a clearly defined edge to your pond.
Whether you grow your new turf on soil or rock wool, you will need to water thoroughly and regularly until the turf takes root or knits together with the rock wool. This will take about a month. An occasional weak feed is recommended. No chemical products should be used as this may run-off into the pond water and be toxic to wildlife inhabitants, aquatic plants and fish.
To reduce overall maintenance particularly if growing on soil, is to choose a non-rhizomatous grass. If not the grass will start growing into marginal plants growing on the edge of the pond and start looking untidy. A small stone wall around the inside of the pond with stop soil crumbling into pond and turf can be grown over the to to hide the wall while also protecting the pond liner.
